I love the idea of Village Inn. I just don't like the cheap ingredients. That's why I love Doug's Breakfast and Lunch Diner. Located in East Colorado Springs, Doug's is Village Inn food but done better, like Azada is a premium Chipotle.
It's a well kept secret of a restaurant, serving New Mexico style breakfast and lunch items. If I had to sum up Doug's, it would be: homemade griddle biscuits, New Mexico, and aliens.
There is a mild New Mexico decor in the restaurant, and a couple little green men plushies in the restaurant, as well as a shelved burger suit that reminds me of Jean's suit from Bob's Burgers.
It's never been busy here, though I haven't only eaten here around the 10-11AM timeframe. We get seated quickly, and I appreciate the open kitchen. You can see everything the cook is doing there, so there's a higher level of trust. Everything is pretty open in this restaurant, and I do like that about this place.
What you have to get when you eat here is the homemade griddle biscuits and homemade jam. One buttery biscuit is the size of two, and the jams are exquisite. The owners make the jams weekly, and not every jam is available all the time. The jams that I'm aware of so far are the strawberry rhubarb (my favorite), cranberry, a cherry/berry combo, and a palisade peach/habanero.
I usually get a breakfast burrito, but today I had the big pig omelette, and Tessa got the clint omelette.
It's quite a filling omelette, though I did get it smothered in green chili on top, and it's a lot of fatty meat. Delicious.
Staff is friendly and attentive, and there is a lot to look at on the walls while you wait. I asked our waitress how many aliens they had in their restaurant, and she said that it was actually a recent thing, but she wasn't surprised since the owners are from New Mexico.
If you look at the menu, you'll also see a flying saucer instead of an apostrophe:
I have since dubbed this "the alien restaurant." I think Doug's has a lot in taste to set it apart from other casual dining, but I think an alien theme would be quite fun! As their marquee on top of the kitchen line says, "Welcome to Doug's 4 out of this world food!"
Yes, they also sell their jam! We picked up a pint of peach/habanero jam from Doug's Diner for family, since we have some jam aficionados. If you like their jam, be sure to ask for some extra to go!
